David Himbara’s Story of Transnational Repression

“There is no way that I can meet a Rwandan now. The sense of family no longer exists.” David Himbara was a senior advisor to Rwandan President Paul Kagame. In this video, he describes how the Rwandan government’s repressive actions—including multiple assassination and kidnapping attempts—have devastated his life and his family. Transnational repression is when governments reach into other countries to silence activists and dissent through violence and intimidation. Repressive actions against everyday citizens like David present a dangerous threat to human freedom and security around the world.
