This document examines how for the first time since democracy was introduced in Spain more than 40 years ago, the Partido Popular (PP) has managed to secure an absolute majority in the most populous autonomous community of Andalusia. Andalusia had been firmly in the political hands of the Partido Social Obrero Español (PSOE) for decades. The PP has also managed to win over iconic PSOE strongholds like Seville. Therefore, the election result is rated as “historic” by the observers.
