The intensification of the persecution of civil society organizations, journalists and human rights defenders has led Venezuela to be included in the most recent watch list of the CIVICUS monitor along with Palestine, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and Senegal, published on December 5. March. In December 2023, the rating of Venezuela’s civic space went from “repressive” to “closed,” becoming the third country in the Americas to receive this rating, along with Cuba and Nicaragua. This classification represents the lowest level that a State can receive according to the monitor’s methodology.
