Political crises in the Andean countries

Democracies in the Andean region are vulnerable to crises driven by social explosions, political and social polarization, electoral denialism, organized crime and the weakness of the rule of law. This report analyzes the state of democracy in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela, and offers a diagnosis of three essential components of democracies: electoral competition and integrity, rights and freedoms, constitution and rule of law. Based on a comparative investigation of the challenges and opportunities for improvement, recommendations are presented to confront the current democratic crises within the region with precise measures to strengthen coexistence and democratic culture.
