Date: September 10 – 12, 2024

Location: Kampala, Uganda

Host: Secretariat of the African Election Observers Network, The Alliance for Financial Monitoring, Kenyan Chapter of Democracy Without Borders

The Electoral Integrity in Africa Summit will take place on Tuesday 10 September through Thursday 12 September, 2024, in Kampala, Uganda. The summit aims to address democratic decline, key electoral integrity deficits, and the crucial role of citizen election observers in safeguarding democracy against the rise of authoritarianism in Africa.

It will provide a platform for participants to shape and share their visions regarding the contributions of citizen observers and their organizations in building and rebuilding electoral integrity. Upholding electoral integrity is essential for the consolidation of democracy, peace, security, and stability In Africa.

The Electoral Integrity Report 2023 revealed that Africa hosts some of the lowest-rated elections worldwide, with the Republic of Congo (27), Angola (31), and Equatorial Guinea (16) scoring particularly poorly. These nations struggle with electoral laws, the voting process, and the performance of electoral authorities. Campaign finance regulation, campaign media, and voter registration are the lowest-scoring indicators of electoral integrity. Conversely, the vote count stands out as the highest rated indicator. Recent AfroBarometer Round 10 Surveys indicate that commitments to democracy in half of the African countries has fallen below 50%, a worrying trend. The need for democratic renewal and resistance to authoritarian tendencies is urgent and clear.
