Survival Sunday with Gina Romero | How can the UN protect freedoms?

Join Atlas Movement for an Online event with United Nations Special Rapporteur Gina Romero on how can the UN protect freedoms.

November 17th at 7 am COT / 8 am EST / 1 pm CET / 16:30 IST

Global freedom declined for the 18th year in 2023. Today, almost 40% of the world’s population lives under authoritarian rule. This impacts the billions of people directly affected, and us all. A threat to justice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Remember?! That’s when we need the United Nations to protect, promote and uphold freedoms and rights. But is it still capable of doing so? How do we support and better the system to ensure our future? This is what we’ll seek to find out during this Survival Sunday event, opening with UN Special Rapporteur Gina Romero, and followed by working group discussions.!

Who is Gina Romero? Gina Paola Romero Rodríguez is a Colombian activist who co-founded the Latin American and Caribbean Network for Democracy. In 2024 she became the United Nations special rapporteur on the freedom of peaceful assembly and association.

What is a Grassroots Consultation? It’s a participative event to harness your ideas, vision, and passion to solve the most urgent threats of our times. The United Nations is too remote, isolated and out of touch with the people of our planet. Through this work, we change this, involving individuals and communities from around the planet. And we mean it: our teams of volunteers will then take those ideas, work on them and we will push them in our United Nations Secretary-General Selection Process campaign.

What will happen? Atlas Movement will involve you to create a genuine political revolution. They know it may be daunting to be challenged with coming up with ideas to save the world, but we have your back. They have facilitated many successful consultations before. Together, you will 1) hear from an expert in the field during a panel, 2)  Identify the core sticking points/issues, 3) develop concrete solutions that we will push forward in our UN campaign.
