A lack of transparency of public institutions leads to diminished public trust, reduced accountability, and limited citizen oversight. The labour inspection system is a crucial mechanism for safeguarding labour rights, with its primary mission being to ensure compliance with labour laws. Given the significant role and functions of the Labour Inspection Service, there is a high public interest in information related to its activities.

In 2023, Law and Public Policy Center, with the support of the Open Society Georgia Foundation, monitored the transparency and accountability of the Labour Inspection Service, identified existing challenges and developed relevant recommendations. Researchers assessed the practices of providing public information and proactive publication of information by the Labour Inspection Service. The study revealed significant challenges in the proactive transparency of the Labour Inspection Service. The assessment showed that the Labour Inspection Service did not fully comply with the requirements of Georgian legislation regarding the proactive publication of information on its website. A substantial amount of public information, particularly related to financing and budgeting, was absent from the Service’s website.

Following the public dissemination of this study, the Labour Inspection Service began to proactively publish some public information that had been missing during the monitoring period. This improvement in transparency enhances the accountability of a public institution and allows the citizens to exercise more effective control over its activities.
