Several West African countries are experiencing one form of insecurity or the other, each experiencing escalating violence linked to both insurgency and localized conflicts. As part of efforts to finding concrete solutions to these crises, last week, our partner Building Blocks for Peace Foundation, together with the regional secretariat of Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) in West Africa hosted a regional dialogue on the theme: Cross-Border Peace and Security: New Realities, Opportunities and Approaches for Peacebuilding in West Africa. The meeting had in attendance relevant actors from government, civil society, academics and development partners working on peace and security in West Africa. The dialogue explored some of the identified challenges in West Africa such as the breakdown of formal and informal justice system, poor intelligence management, weak livelihood systems among others. At the end of the dialogue, concrete recommendations and strategies for addressing regional security challenges were developed.
