Call for Contributions: UN Report on Freedom of Association and Global Financing Ecosystem

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Gina Romero, has launched a call for contributions for her upcoming thematic report to the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, to be presented in October 2025. She has kindly asked me to help disseminate the call, and I encourage you to share your experiences, case studies, and analysis.

Theme of the report: Freedom of association, collective action, and human solidarity in the face of shifting global financing ecosystems. The Special Rapporteur is seeking contributions from civil society organizations, social movements, human rights defenders, academics, governments, and multilateral institutions. Submissions may address:

  • The impact of collapsing international aid on civil society
  • Criminalization, stigmatization, and restrictions linked to foreign funding
  • Shrinking civic space and resilience strategies
  • The role of security policies in suppressing collective action
  • Recommendations toward a more just and sustainable global aid architecture
