On the 75th anniversary of the United Nations (UN75), amidst the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, UN Member States committed to enhancing global governance for the benefit of present and future generations. They tasked the UN Secretary-General with providing recommendations to tackle current and future challenges. The Secretary General invited Club de Madrid Members to contribute his report: “Our Common Agenda (OCA)”.

Club de Madrid organized four key consultations with its Members and Advisors, collecting valuable regional perspectives on the future of multilateralism. The recommendations from these discussions were compiled into the report “Our Common Agenda: UN After75,” which was subsequently shared with the UNSG office.

The Secretary-General incorporated many of these recommendations into his report, which emphasized accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and advancing the commitments of the UN75 Declaration. One of the standout proposals from CdM was the suggestion to hold a World Social Summit in 2025, addressing emerging gaps since 2015 that require new intergovernmental agreements. As a result, CdM President Danilo Türk joined the High-Level Advisory Board of Effective Multilateralism (HLAB) and played a strategic role in implementing the OCA recommendations. Through persistent advocacy, Club de Madrid successfully championed the organization of a second World Social Summit, which was officially endorsed in February 2024 through resolution 78/L.39. The General Assembly decided to convene the World Social Summit in 2025, marking it as the Second World Summit for Social Development.
