Democracia Digital: Identifying Digital Tools for Democracy
Today, digital tools have the power to make a positive change on society, seeking collective well-being in areas related to democracy, transparency, accountability and good governance but also social issues, education and politics.
Democracia Digital managed to identify around a thousand good digital practices in Peru and Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America. Since 2014, Democracia Digital has been promoting the National Award on Digital Democracy throughout Peru with the aim of recognising those technological and digital initiatives that meet the needs and demands of citizens. Given the excellent impact of this competition in Peru, Democracia Digital decided to extend this initiative to Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, and thus in 2021, it launched the Latin American Award on Digital Democracy for the first time. In both competitions, the projects seek to alert, denounce, inform, educate, raise awareness, provide services, facilitate procedures, among other objectives. These are projects focused on generating transparency, opening data, facilitating citizen participation, denouncing acts of corruption or bad practices, increasing digital inclusion, reducing violence and discrimination, promoting debate and deliberation, among other aspects.
All these good digital practices are consolidated in two Observatories that have been created in order to give them visibility and support their scaling and expansion. These are: the National Observatory on Digital Democracy and the Latin American Observatory on Digital Democracy. Today, the Award on Digital Democracy is in its eleventh edition and keeps attracting and showcasing excellent digital tools for democracy.
