Powering Climate Action Through Democracy

Tuesday 7 October, from 8:30 to 10:30 Am. At Hibridalab (Avenida Miguel de Unamuno, 1, Vitoria-Gasteiz).

Organised by: Political Watch, European Climate Foundation and Democracy for Transition (D4T) Coalition.

Description:

As the urgency of the ecological transition intensifies, the way societies respond is increasingly tied to the health of their democratic systems. Effective climate action requires inclusive decision-making, legitimacy, and open civic space, while democratic renewal depends on addressing the challenges posed by climate change and ensuring fair, sustainable transitions.

In this context, it is essential to create spaces where civil society, policymakers, and practitioners can reflect together on the nexus between climate and democracy. This gathering will provide an opportunity to exchange perspectives, share lessons from both successes and failures, and consider how democratic innovations and practices can strengthen climate action, and how climate policies, in turn, can contribute to more resilient democracies.

The core of the workshop will be an interactive collective intelligence exercise, designed to surface key obstacles and co-develop possible solutions, bridging ideas with practice. Participants will work in small groups to “diagnose” key “illnesses” in the democracy-climate nexus, and collaboratively propose actionable solutions. The aim of this exercise is using a role role-play approach to connect conceptual understandings with practical applications. The session will be closed with a plenary discussion to synthesize insights, reflect on the debates and highlight opportunities for follow-up collaborations.
