Law and Public Policy Center & Open Society Georgia Foundation Positive Outcome Story: The students’ enhanced understanding of social rights and policymaking
Implementation of economic and social rights, especially the right to adequate housing is a significant challenge in Georgia. The lack of public awareness about these challenges also constitutes a problem. Additionally, opportunities for gaining practical knowledge and engaging in critical discussions on this topic are scarce.
In February 2023, Law and Public Policy Center, with the support of the Open Society Georgia Foundation, organized a Winter School on Social Rights to increase awareness of the challenges related to the right to adequate housing in Georgia. This initiative aimed to educate students on international standards, national legislation, and policies, as well as the existing challenges in the country. The program included both theoretical and practical components. Students were provided with insights into this right through lectures and discussions on international standards and national policies. This foundational knowledge was crucial in equipping the students to understand and engage with the complexities of current issues in Georgia. They participated in a simulated meeting of the inter-agency commission, where they discussed and devised solutions to existing problems.
The students’ enhanced understanding of the right to adequate housing and practical policymaking contributed to a more informed and engaged citizenry. In addition, the project fostered critical thinking skills among the participants, empowering them to actively participate in and influence democratic processes. Furthermore, by addressing issues of adequate housing, the initiative highlighted the importance of economic and social rights in the broader context of democratic governance and social justice. This initiative not only educated future leaders but also underscored the principles of public accountability and active citizen participation essential for democracy.
