In June 2023, the Open Society Foundations launched a competitive Applied AI in Journalism Challenge as part of an effort to advance prototype applications of AI in mission-driven newsrooms around the world. Over 100 teams submitted applications; 12 were chosen to receive a $5,000 grant, and invited to a final judging session in Chiang Mai, Thailand, to choose one winner to receive a $25,000 grant to develop their work further.
