Zoha Waseem, Assistant Professor at the University of Warwick, and Yasser Kureshi, Departmental Lecturer at the University of Oxford, argue that the military will remain embedded in Pakistan`s hybrid regime after the February elections. Although public trust in the military has been compromised, politicians remain attached to the military in order to persistently occupy high-profile positions in the government, such as Prime Minister and members of the cabinet. The authors anticipate that the Pakistani regime will face a series of challenges in the event of state repression of civil society’s resistance to military interventions, coupled with an inability to address economic grievances and to suppress opposition stemming from minority groups and separatists.
