The Carter Center laments the sudden death Saturday of the renowned Haitian singer Mikaben, who collaborated with the Center’s Hispaniola Initiative, the Ministère de la Santé Publique et de la Population, the Malaria Zero Consortium, and other high-profile artists to create the popular song and video “Malaria Alanba.” In the video, the singer, whose real name was Michael Benjamin, portrays a doctor to inform fellow Haitians about malaria and available treatments. “He was a very engaged musician. He always sang the beauty of the country,” said Dr. Luccene Desir, in-country manager of the Hispaniola Initiative. “In my friend Mikaben’s honor, we should all redouble our efforts to eliminate malaria from Haiti and the Dominican Republic.”
