This document explains how EPD sees the need to go beyond Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), which is why SPACE addresses the whole range of civil society actors, organised and spontaneous, traditional and non-traditional. This also includes opposition parties, who hold very different view of what constitutes civic or democratic space from ruling parties, and who often suffer from prosecution and repression as much as civil society activists.
