This report explores how Twitter holds the potential to enable journalists to diversify their reporting. Worldwide, and especially in developing countries, media outlets face several barriers to expanding coverage to include a diversity of events and perspectives. These include a concentration of media outlets in urban centers, shoestring budgets, and established routines for reporting that rely on elite gatekeepers. Twitter, in theory, may help provide the means to circumvent these barriers if journalists use the platform to generate story ideas, identify sources, and conduct research in ways that seek out new, non-elite voices.
