Young Women in Action(YWA) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) conducted Voter Education prior to the Zambia 2021 General Elections held on 12th August. The exercise contributed to the Democracy Strengthening in Zambia Project being run by the UNDP. The target were first time voters who usually fall in the age 15 to 35 years of age. YWA rolled out the voter education from 1st July until 11th August 2021 in Lundazi, Chipata, Chongwe, Kabwe, Lusaka and Mazabuka districts which make up some of the organisation’s catchment areas. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the YWA voter educators were unable to carry out sensitisation activities that bring masses together in order to conduct voter education exercises as per usual. Therefore, the voter education instead took the form of door-to-door sensitization, social media advocacy as well as traditional media strategies such as radio programmes. The voter education was further enhanced by support from the Cater Center which enabled YWA to air out jiggles giving out key voter education points such as how to correctly mark on one’s preferred candidate, ensuring that nails had no nail vanish, voting timeframe and masking up.
