The Somali Media Women Association (SOMWA)/ https://somwa.org is primarily a female journalist media organization giving voice, visibility, capacity and opportunities to mainly women journalists and leaders across Somalia. SOMWA also fosters female journalists’ technical and professional development in relevant contemporary mattes such as elections, democracy, free and independent media, openness and accountability and so on.

SOMWA also works with diverse stakeholders including (female) politicians who also benefit from a range of capacity-strengthening initiatives, for example, the series of communications and public speaking training workshops conducted and planned for female politicians in Somalia’s Hudur in Bakool and Baidoa in Southwest State.

As a rights and pro-democracy organization, SOMWA fosters community awareness, education and information on critical aspects like gender equality and elimination of gender-based violence (GBV). We do this through approaches such as celebrations or events/days such as the 16 Days of Activism.
