Yiaga Africa is a civic hub of changemakers and a non-governmental organization promoting democracy, governance and development in Africa. Our mission is to build and support democracies anchored on the principles of inclusion, accountability and justice
through research, advocacy and capacity development. With a vision for a people-driven democratic and developed Africa, Yiaga Africa focuses on three major program areas: Elections, Legislative Engagement and Democracy and Governance. Yiaga Africa invests in movement building and adopts a people-driven approach in its program implementation to create people power in advocating for change.
Since its inception in 2007, Yiaga Africa has evolved as one of the leading organizations working on democracy and elections in Nigeria and Africa. Yiaga Africa, in recognizing the fundamental challenges with the electoral process within the region and its potential impact on the quality of democracy in Africa designed its election program to respond to threats to democratic elections. Yiaga Africa’s Election program adopts a multi-pronged approach which is anchored on four pillars; i) Supporting election management bodies, ii) promoting electoral integrity, iii) election reforms, and, iv) electoral research/production of knowledge materials.
In promoting electoral integrity, Yiaga Africa has deployed election study/observation missions within the continent and beyond. Within the continent, Yiaga Africa has led election study/observation missions in Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, the Gambia and South Africa. Over the years, beyond the study/observation mission, Yiaga Africa also provides election technical assistance to civil society organisations and works with election management bodies in countries such as The Gambia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Ethiopia.
Beyond its work in the region, Yiaga Africa, with the support of the US Mission in Nigeria, also deployed a study mission to the United States of America for the 2016 presidential election.
