The Youth Café Positive Outcome Story: “Ignite African Youth Project” – Empowering Youth for Increased Trust in Political Institutions
A concerning trend is evident on a global scale. Public trust and confidence in political institutions are at an all time low. Record number of voters are expressing a lack of faith in governments’ commitments to prioritize national interests over political parties. The public harbors more doubts than ever regarding politicians and governments trustworthiness and effectiveness. Citizens are skeptical of politicians’ veracity when faced with difficult situations and this impulse is further compounded by rising costs and multitude of political scandals. Additionally, Africa faces challenges such as political instability, climate related insecurities, weak state capacity, illegitimate elections, inadequate judicial capacity and corruption – factors that continue to erode democracy in the continent, undermining youth engagement in democratic processes.
The Ignite African Youth Project emerges as a response to this crisis. A strategic response fueled by a global movement “Women and Youth in Democracy Initiative (WYDE) Civic engagement.” This initiative paves ways for a more empowered youth voice in public affairs. The project receives support from the European Partnership for Democracy, powered by the European Union. Recognizing the critical role of youth participation and inclusion in strengthening African democracies, The Youth Cafe partnered with Youth Democracy Cohort and ten youth member organizations from Kenya, Ghana, Zambia and Central African Republic to develop the Project. The project zeroed in on specific regions such Zambia, Kenya, Central African Republic and Ghana where limited education, economic hardship and restricted access to resources continue to stifle youth potential. The mission: to empower young Africans, particularly young women, to actively participate in shaping their democracies.
The project unfolded meticulously, first by conducting an assessment of the current state of youth engagement. This was followed by facilitated workshops, masterclasses covering topics such as the future of youth in digital governance, inclusivity in democracy for future generations and digital tools in democracy. We leveraged on national and international forums such as the People’s Dialogue Festival which serves as a platform for political parties and various actors both state and non-state to engage in dialogue on governance reforms, socio-economic issues and safeguarding democratic gains – with the overarching aim being to foster meaningful participation and civic engagement and promote trust between the system and citizens. Advocacy activities further spurred progress, with “Advocacy by Design: A workshop on youth-led resilience and inclusive democracy” serving as a culminating event for the project. Numerous participants expressed their satisfaction with the program, highlighting a sense of empowerment and a refined skill set for democratic advocacy. The “Advocacy Toolkit for youth in democratic governance” has become the African youth weapon of choice. A comprehensive resource and practical guide tailored to the specific needs and contexts of youth and youth organizations in democratic Africa. It draws on the expertise and experiences of youth leaders and advocates across the region, ensuring that it reflects the realities and aspirations of young people themselves especially in democratic processes.
In essence, The Ignite African Youth Project is about building a stronger democracy for the future. By equipping young people with the knowledge, tools, and the platform for advocacy, the project laid the groundwork for a more transparent, informed and inclusive Africa. We are envisioning a future where young voices echo through the halls of power, fostering a more resilient and vibrant democracy.
