International Democracy Day 2024 Global Events
In 2007, the United Nations declared September 15 as the International Day of Democracy, a day set aside to reflect on the state of democracy worldwide and the efforts needed to sustain it. Democracy is not just an end goal but an ongoing process that requires the active participation of the international community, national governments, civil society, and individuals. Only through this collective effort can the ideals of democracy be realized for everyone, everywhere.
A fundamental component of a healthy democracy is freedom of expression, which is enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This right ensures that everyone has the freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media, regardless of frontiers. However, despite its importance, freedom of expression is often threatened by certain governments and some people in power who seek to suppress dissenting voices.
As we observe International Democracy Day, it’s important to recognize that democracy is not guaranteed. It requires continuous effort, vigilance, and active participation from all sectors of society. This day serves as a call to action for everyone to engage in discussions about democracy, support initiatives that uphold democratic values, and advocate for the protection of human rights, including freedom of expression and press freedom.
Together, we can work to ensure that the principles of democracy are upheld and enjoyed by all.
